What Exactly Is An Apostille Anyway?

The word Apostille is of French origin. It refers to an addition, annotation, or remark made in the margin of a document or at the end of a letter. An Apostille as it relates to the 1961 Hague Convention is used in the authentication of public documents. The Hague Convention abolished the requirement of Legalizing foreign public and private documents through an embassy or consulate. The Convention provides for the simplified certification of public and private documents to be used in countries that have joined the convention. Under the Hague Convention, signatory countries have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries if those public documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an Apostille. The Apostille certificate ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid in another signatory country.
